Crack the MD codes

In partnership with SA’s top medical aesthetic companies

Wanting the skin-enhancing benefits of injectables likes fillers, while still looking like yourself? MD Codes makes this possible.

The treatment possibilities with injectable fillers expanded greatly when Dr. Mauricio de Maio first introduced the eight-point lift to the world over a decade ago.

The plus side of this injecting technique was the ability to create a lifting effect on facial features without surgery.

The unfortunate downside, in some cases, was a lack of understanding and overzealous injecting, which led to unnatural results – people with overfilled and frozen faces. We’ve all seen barely recognisable images of celebrities looking more like caricatures than real people.

The reason this occurred was because this was pioneering technology, and there was no clear guidance on how injectable fillers could be used beyond the treatment of lines.

And against this trend, people have increasingly been asking for more natural results, or ‘tweakments’.

Fortunately, a solution has emerged. Dr. de Maio understood that there was a need for a systematic approach, and so, after more than 20 years of clinical practice, he has now introduced the MD Codes™. These are specific guidelines injectors will use on a patient’s face to achieve safe and natural results in replacing lost volume, as well as smoothing and correcting blemishes that come about with ageing and environmental damage.

The MD Codes give the injecting doctor a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of the human face. And this, in turn, leads to the design of better facial aesthetic treatment plans.

What are MD Codes?

The MD Codes system works by viewing the face as a whole and understanding that certain strategic changes will have a direct impact on surrounding areas.

The injecting doctors are trained to view the face holistically, and instead of addressing exact issues, like hollow eye sockets or pronounced nasal labial lines, for example, they will place dermal fillers and Botulinum Toxin strategically in a combination of injection sites. This achieves direct and indirect effects by giving volume and structure to the face.

If you decide to have a consultation, the trained doctors at Skin Renewal will first do a thorough personalised facial assessment based on your skeletal structure, individual movement and desired outcome. While the same principle is applied, it works according to your individual features and characteristics.

The injector doctors are equipped with strict guidelines regarding how to best approach the issues at hand. These are prioritised and addressed according to three levels – foundation, contouring and refinement.

How is using MD Codes different?

According to the MD Codes™ method, each facial area – cheek, chin, lips, etc., is further divided into subunits that must be considered during injection. These subunits are the structural sites that will create or recreate the most desirable natural facial architecture for each person.

What does that mean for you?

When we look at ourselves, we tend to hone in on the things that bother us about our appearance, no matter how tiny, which may lead to a distorted perspective of self-image.

This has been the experience of the team of injectors at Skin Renewal. When they speak to their patients about what bothers them, or what they want to improve, the patient usually points to a specific distraction (such as lines and folds). They are often not aware that by addressing that particular distraction in isolation, the overall ‘message’ of the face won’t be changed.

This is where the professional advice and assessment comes in. The doctor is trained to look at your face holistically and able to see what is needed to give an overall improvement, with a natural result – the best you possible.

Following a full assessment, an ideal plan is discussed according to the three levels – foundational changes, followed by contouring and then refinement. This allows for a proactive approach, starting with the most impactful work first.

Depending on your budget, a manageable, step-by-step plan will be arranged for you.
